Virginia Tech researcher examining malignant melanoma in horses
Malignant melanoma is a dangerous, aggressive form of cancer and approximately 54,000 new cases are diagnosed every year, according to the American Cancer Society. Interestingly, there are many similarities between malignant melanoma in horses and malignant melanoma in people.
Recognizing the extraordinary opportunity for translational research that the disease represents, Dr. John L. Robertson, a professor in the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech
and director of the college's Center for Comparative Oncology (CECO), has been looking at one experimental treatment.
During a presentation before a regional meeting of the American Cancer Society in Roanoke, Va., Robertson detailed some of the work he is doing with the use of Frankincense oil as a possible treatment for malignant melanoma in horses.
The risk factors for malignant melanoma in people and horses are very similar, according to Robertson. In people, risk factors include pale complexion and hair, exposure to excessive sunlight and sunburns and aging. Horses at risk also have a pale coat of grey to white and there seems to be a correlation to aging, which could be a result of chronic exposure to sunlight, he said. In each, the disease is an infiltrated pigmented malignancy that is difficult to manage. Conventional therapies include chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy, and surgery.
The disease often affects horses with the development of lesions on the lips, neck, and perineal area.
Robertson presented the story of Chili, a handsome, 11-year old Thoroughbred and champion jumper that was diagnosed with multi-centric malignant melanoma at the age of seven. Told by her local practitioner that there was not much that could be done for Chili and aware of Robertson's interest in evaluating an experimental therapy, Chili's owner asked if Robertson would work with Chili.
That experimental therapy involved the use of frankincense oil, a compound known as a valuable treatment for wounds for more than 2,000 years, and one people are reminded of every Christmas when they recall the Gifts of the Magi brought to the Christ-child.
Frankincense oil is a fragrant botanical oil distillate made from fermented plants, explains Robertson, who adds that it contains hundreds of constituents, including boswellic acid, a component that is known to have anti-neoplastic properties. Scientists have demonstrated that the oil has potent anti-inflammatory effects and anti-tumor properties when evaluated in tissue culture with tumors such as astrocytomas, melanomas, and fibrosarcomas. Furthermore, he said, it appears to have fairly selective anti-tumor activity and does not appear to disrupt normal cells. But much about how it affects actual cancer patients is unknown.
Chili's experimental protocol involved daily injections of medicinal grade, sterile frankincense oil directly into his tumors and the application of oil on topical tumors, while Chili's comfort and well-being was carefully maintained through pain and nutritional management, including copious amounts of his favorite peeled baby carrots and peppermints.
The lesions were observed, measured, photographed, and periodically biopsied, according to Robertson. Those tumor biopsies demonstrated that some small tumor cells were destroyed by the treatment and those treated topically were reduced in size. Unfortunately, however, Chili passed away on October 18, 2005 as a result of the progressive and relentless growth of the non-treated tumors.
Chili's involvement with CeCO and the experimental protocol did result in
some important achievements, according to Robertson.
"I think this research on frankincense oil suggests that this ancient medicine may have significant modern uses for chemotherapy of non-resectable malignancies."
Information gleaned from this Phase I-II National Cancer Institute format clinical trial has supported the development of grant applications and helped in the treatment of five additional horses, Robertson said. A collaboration with the Clinical Research Program at Wake Forest University's Comprehensive Cancer Center is being discussed.

Hints From Heloise - Window Cleaner
"Dear Heloise: I saw you on television recently. You have a recipe for window cleaner that contained water, alcohol, vinegar and some essential oil. I've looked and cannot find the recipe. Can you please print it? -- Connie Taylor of Granite Shoals, Texas
Connie, this is an updated window cleaner, and it is so cheap to make and works just like expensive commercial products. Just mix 12-16 ounces of water, 1/2 cup white or apple-cider vinegar, 1/4 cup (70 percent) rubbing alcohol, 1-2 drops of blue or green food color (if desired) and 1-2 drops lavender or orange or your favorite essential oil. When cleaning windows, I use newspaper because it doesn't leave lint behind, you are recycling, and newspapers are almost free. Spray the newspaper first (not the window), then wipe down the window. If you wipe in one direction on one side, then the other direction on the other side, you can see which side has streaks. All this costs is a little elbow grease and a few cents. -- Heloise"

Director, Conscious Healing Institute
Today people live longer. Average life expectancy is now 77.2 years,
according to the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics. That
represents a greater than 10-year increase over life expectancy in
the 1960s. We celebrate more years of marriage, and enjoy more time
with our children, grandchildren even our great-children. Yet the
quality of life is not always commensurate with the length of life.
While our current living standard offers more years, is does not
always offer more joy, health and happiness. Living in an
environment rich in pollutants and toxins makes heavy demands on our
immune system. Our bodies are burdened with the chemicals and
synthetics found in commercial soaps, toothpastes, cosmetics,
kitchen cleansers, pharmaceuticals, even the water we drink and
bathe in, and increasingly they are also found in the food chain.
Our bodies are God's magnificent creations, built to withstand and
flourish even under difficult circumstances. Yet, just as a water
pitcher can contain only so much water, our bodies can only handle
so many chemical attacks before they overflow with chemicals,
breaking down our redundant life-support systems, and dramatically
increasing our chances for systemic illnesses, such as heart
disease, diabetes, arthritis, and chronic infections.
Vitamins, minerals, essential oils, and anti-oxidant rich super-
foods such as the NingXia Wolfberry support the body, helping to
keep it running like a well-oiled machine. They diminish, and may
even remediate, digest and remove toxins from our system.
In 2004, researchers at the Rush Institute for Healthy Aging, in
Chicago, found evidence suggesting that Alzheimer's was more likely
to occur in seniors with reduced levels of niacin than in
individuals with niacin to spare. Researchers suspect that B
vitamins protect, nurture and support dendritic growth, a key
component for brain health. Other recent research highlights the
importance of B vitamins in protecting the brain from stroke and
dementia, two of the main reasons for disability in the elderly.
A study published in Stroke: Journal of the American Heart
Association, published in 2002, found that people with moderately
high levels of homosysteine, an amino acid that damages blood
vessels, had a more than fivefold increased risk of stroke and a
threefold increased risk for Alzheimer's disease. According to
research, B vitamins can help quench homocysteine, and Vitamin B3
(niacin) has been linked to brain health.
An article in Alternative Medicine magazine, August, 2005,
says "Roughly 4.5 million Americans have Alzheimer's disease, the
leading cause of dementia." By 2050 that number is expected to
quadruple to 16 million according to the Alzheimer's Association. In
the article, Decker Weiss, ND, a naturopathic physician at the
Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix is quoted as saying, "You've got
to get in the habit of taking B vitamins every day."
So, now is the time to start supporting your brain, before the first
signs of trouble ever appear. Fortunately, for those who are already
experiencing the first glimmers of dementia, or may be providing
care for a relative that has dementia or Alzheimer's, our great
Young Living products offer tremendous hope.
A very sweet and dear member of my Young Living group, who is an
LPN, has had wonderful results using Young Living oils and
supplements for her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's. In fact,
her mother's MD now refers patients to my friend for information
about the oils and supplements she uses for her Mom, in the hopes
that they may provide better support with fewer side effects than
the options the MD can currently offer. Plus, there are many
benefits for family members who are providing in-home care for aging
relatives. My friend regularly orders:
Berry Young Juice
Lavender oil
Peace & Calming
Clarity
Brain Power
If I were dealing with this challenge or looking for a way to avoid
this possible future, I would place a standing monthly order for
Berry Young Juice or the new NingXia Red. These super-foods reduce
inflammation in tissues that may contribute to arterial stress,
considered to be a contributing factor in stroke and dementia.
Super B (Contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12)
Master His and/or Master Hers (Contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6,
and B12) Brain Power Clarity)
Brain Power and Clarity are two of my favorite oils. I use them
almost every afternoon to give me a lift. When I am teaching, if I
start to lose concentration or am unable to find the right words,
all I have to do is put a drop of Brain Power under my tongue, put
Clarity on the back of my neck, and just a drop of Peppermint around
my hairline. They work wonders! And I am able to function at 100%
for hours with just 1-2 drops of each oil.
I have also found it very beneficial to keep Berry Young Juice [now
NingXia Red], Wolfberry bars, and the 3 oils previously mentioned
readily available when traveling. They help keep me alert and
focused, providing an OH-SO-EASY way to stay awake. No caffeine or
sugar required!
For more information on oils and supplements for the brain, be sure
to check suggestions in your Essential Oils Desk Reference (EODR).
Thanks to the pioneering efforts of Gary Young and his company,
Young Living Essential Oils, thousands of men, women, children, and
even animals are now enjoying the miracles of their own,
personal "oil stories."

Nature's Health Insurance
Discover Nature's Health Insurance Program
(Protection Against Health Disaster)
A special report from Essential Oils Online.
In Texas, fear of a deadly outbreak of a fast-acting bacteria
has families in near panic. 19 people, a third of them
children, have died in Austin and Houston since Christmas
from a bacteria called streptococcus. A special hot line has
been set-up and is fielding 300 calls a day from concerned
citizens. The concern is over two severe forms of strep, a
"flesh-eating bacteria" and the other which causes toxic shock
syndrome. This is not fiction, but is happening as I write,
March 1998.
In Illinois, the same thing is happening. 10 people have died
in Decatur from the same deadly form of bacterial outbreak. 2
deaths were also reported in Chicago in February. Other
outbreaks have been reported in California, Washington and
Massachusetts.
Health officials simply do not know how to stop streptococcus,
or why it kills some people while causing only a mild illness
in others. James Musser, Director of the Baylor College of
Medicine's Institute for the Study of Human Bacterial
Pathogenesis, said, "I understand the public frustration. I've
been studying this organism for a decade, and I'm frustrated."
Dr. Musser's frustration is shared by millions. Why is it that
so-called "modern" medicine is so helpless against such
simple, yet deadly life-forms? The simple answer is that
modern medicine looks to unproven patented medicine for
health solutions, rather than to proven natural remedies.
Modern medicine has chosen to follow the practice of treating
disease with man-made antibiotics and chemical drugs. If
these man-made inventions worked, fine...but they do not
work. Time, agonizing side-effects and 000's of premature
deaths painfully bare this out.
Man-made chemical drugs and antibiotics are, at best, band-
aid approaches to solving the health crisis in America. Yet,
inspite of repeated failures, the medical community continues
to use these failing modalities to fight disease outbreaks,
such as in the case of streptococcus now facing us. To wit: In
Texas a 3 year old boy, who has the flesh-eating form of strep,
is being given massive doses of antibiotics. Why? This
modality is the only one his doctors know, or are trained in
to fight infectious organisms.
There is an answer to staphylococcus, streptococcus,
meningococcus, pneumococcus, anthrax bacillus, thyphoid
bacillus, diphtheria bacillus, and a host of other bacterial
infections, but it isn't to be found in your doctors medicine
chest.
Look to Nature:
Mother nature's medicine chest is a marvel to behold. For
within this chest are the very provisions needed to prevent,
protect and heal human beings from bacterial infections.
No longer speculation, but proven by standard, clinical
studies, essential oils are mankind's answer to bacterial
infectious outbreaks from striking your loved ones.
In studies conducted at Weber State University, the essential
oils of cinnamon, geranium, lemongrass, melalueca, mt.
savory, oregano and rosewood all proved 100% effective
against streptococcus and staphylococcus.
In studies completed in Europe, the essential oil of thyme
proved 100% effective against anthrax, thyphoid, diphtheria,
and Koch's bacillus...as well as meningococcus. The essence
of lemon oil proved 100% effective against pneumococcus,
staphylococcus and diptheric bacillus. It is the
staphylococcus bacteria that infects and kills 000's of people
who contract infections while staying in hospitals.
All of the above named organisms kill thousands of people
yearly. So why hasn't our American health community turned
to this proven and readily available aromatherapy solution?
Perhaps this is a question you should ask your doctor.
How Bacteria Spread:Bacterial infections are spread from airborne bacteria and by
touching surfaces infected with these organisms. The very air
we breathe may be contaminated from someone else's
sneeze or breath. Touching a telephone or ATM key pad may
spread these bacteria. Anything someone else has touched
can be contaminated with bacteria.
We come into contact with these organisms daily and bring
them home with us. For the most part we are never aware of
this because our body's immune system is always on the job,
daily killing and over-powering invaders. But what happens
when someone's immune system has been compromised?
Unless the immune system can overpower the invasion,
invaders continue to multiply until they have created a
stronghold called an infection. Once established, the infection
can worsen until the body itself is overpowered by the infection
and can no longer support life.
Essential Oil is Nature's Health Insurance Program:
There is no better way to prevent and protect your family from
bacterial invasion then through aromatherapy, the use of
essential oils. While food supplements can strengthen the
body's natural healing system, they cannot prevent and protect
the the body from bacterial invasion the way that essential
oils do. This is one reason why essential oils have been used
since the beginning of time...They are nature's health
insurance program against pathogenic health disasters.
Application is made in one of two ways, diffusion and direct
application. When essential oil is diffused into the
atmosphere of a home or office, the air becomes purified,
purged of harmful bacteria, fungus and mold. The effectiveness
of this procedure is 100% and is like one of those used in
studies by Weber State University. Essential oils kill/destroy
infectious bacteria within seconds of contact. In addition,
aromatic molecules are breathed into the body, where they
trigger numerous immune-boosting, healing and relaxation
responses. This combination one-two punch is the best health
insurance one can have against infectious disease.
Diffusers come in various styles and work in various ways, but
the most effective ones use a glass nebulizer which is
attached to a small aquarium style air pump. Depending on
style, the nebulizer may be attached to a bottle containing
essential oil, or have an opening to add them by the drop.
Diffused by vibration and pushed by the force of air within
the nebulizer, a fine mist of oil is released into the air
where it remains suspended for up to several hours.
There is no set procedure or time schedule for using a
diffuser, but many families diffuse three times a day for
10 to 30 minutes each period. The benefits are immense
when one considers the health hazards we expose ourselves
to daily.
Families with school children can decrease chances of
bacterial contamination by applying the oils directly on their
children before leaving for school. This is an ancient
practice, known long ago as a blessing. The oils penetrate the
skin and go to work within the body as effectively as
diffusing does.
Use caution: Pure oils are very concentrated, and a few drops
can produce significant effects; so please begin slowly to
properly determine the body's response. Pure oils should be
diluted with carrier oil for those who are first time users;
who have fair or sensitive skin; or are being applied to
sensitive areas of the body; or are trying a new oil for the
first time; or who are infants or children.
KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! Your health is nothing to leave to
chance. We live in times of strange diseases with a medical
community left wondering how to stop them. Use the
knowledge you learn to prevent and protect your family from
health disaster. Continue to visit your physician when needed,
but understand his/her limitation working in a system heavily
weighted against natural healing. Lynn - Editor EOO
